The effect of sugar on intestinal health

The Western Diet is characterized by a staggering increase in the consumption of dietary fats and sugars and we are only beginning to understand the effects these changes have on human health. Dietary components can directly alter the function of intestinal epithelium and immune cells found in the lamina propria. We hope to elucidate how excess dietary sugar might affect these cells, especially in the context of dysregulated intestinal immune responses such as those seen in inflammatory bowel diseases.
